library connections
11.13.03 (11:54 am)   [edit]
In response to our question regardiong the connections at the library:

Here is a copy of what has transpired:
My email to the library:
I am a Communications student. I am working on a
project about using laptops on campus. While walking around the library, I
noticed a number of possible laptop connections. I have tried to use many
of them, but they are not working. Are there any plans in the works to
repair these connections so that we could get online at the library?

Thank you in advance for your help.

The response:
Ms. Tomar,

I believe the network jacks that are alive will be in the front areas of
each floor near the windows. The other jacks around the building are not
available due to security restrictions. The library also has wireless
capability which is the way we are encouraging our patrons to connect up -
the advantage being they can be almost anywhere in the building. You can
contact the Tech Store or OCCS for more information on implementing the
wireless capability with your laptop if you are interested in that option.

Hope this helps...

Some Possible Questions For Rusty
11.13.03 (8:51 am)   [edit]
1. Bandwidth- how many people would be able to log on with A. Wireless B. Landline

2. Contacted Library and was told that there are many connections that cannot be used for security and we would like to know why.

3. Get Rusty to elaborate on his laptop ideas ( ie. costs, implementation, insurance, maintenance, etc.)

4. Ask how he feels about WISPS and if they are a possibility at ODU.

5. Find out if a computer company such as dell or compaq might consider cutting a deal of some sort regarding how we can make laptops at ODU a reality.

Just FYI-I emailed the library to ask if they are going to fix all those connections so that we can get online with laptops.
Stay tuned for a response...

Rusty

I will be meeting with Rusty to ask him questions regarding our project. He was a little vaque going over this issue in his presentation. I am going to see if he can elaborate a little bit more.

SonicWall
11.11.03 (9:20 am)   [edit]
For security and peace of mind while surfing the net on WISP, there are also firewalls, anti-virus and content filtering systems. Originally there was WEP (Wireless Equivilent Privacy). However, SonicWall has replaced WEP with IPSec 3DES encryption. What this means is that wireless secury solutions end up tied together with wired security systems. The result of this combination is that the firewalls and other filtering systems are compromised when the wireless security fails. (that can happen for different reasons-details to come) SonicWall's solution is a single device for total network security.
IPSec 3DES is actually a 192bit encryption that provides additional layers of security. I will be adding shortly a more indepth common English translation of what the encryptions are for, and the dire necessity of firewalls, and info filters.

WISP
11.11.03 (9:19 am)   [edit]
How familiar is everyone with WISP? WISP stands for Wireless Internet Service Provider. The way it works is a tower satellite is constructed and mounted at a specific location and then the internet connection is put on a broadband signal for a 35 mile radius. Anyone with the authorization has quick and easy access. However, the question is how quick and easy is it. I am still searching on what kind of speed one can expect for this kind of connection, and how much information can be sent at any given time, knowing that a 1000 or more people will be using it simaltaniously on any given day. Despite this one detail (though it is major) this should prove to be the best option for online connections for the school, were it to move to Mandatory Laptops. The idea is to not have to worry about sitting in certain places to connect, as well as the problem of, if every student has a potential laptop, then every student is going to need a potential connection port, which would mean more wiring for the school. The WISP option at this time seems to be the best. Any other thoughts on this?

If we can get laptops to be incorporated how much opposition do you think we will run into as far as from parents and students about the raise in tuition at ODU.

Questions for getting started
10.28.03 (9:24 am)   [edit]
We feel that it would be very beneficial to every student at ODU to have a laptop included in their tuition or to find some other means to ensure that each student has an equal chance to have one. What do you guys think about this idea and do you have any suggestions?
